The Aquarium of the Bay is located on Pier 39 in San Francisco. A beautiful and vibrant part of the city, the aquarium is a magical escape into the underwater world. With over 20,000 animals, including everything from sharks to jellyfish to otters, it is a full-fledged aquarium and worth taking some time to see.
With walk-through tunnels and touchpools, this aquarium does a great job of incorporating memorable experiences to help students remember what they are learning. A leader in conservation science, the aquarium will provide many opportunities to have great conversations about your student’s views on wildlife and marine ecosystems.
Outside food is not allowed in the aquarium, but there are more than enough eateries to choose from all along the pier. One of our favorites is Boudin’s Bakery. Their clam chowder bread bowls are amazing! Closed-lid drinks are allowed in, so be sure to bring some water.
Because Pier 39 is a tourist destination, parking can be a little difficult. You can use a parking app to find a relatively inexpensive lot nearby, or bite the bullet and pay for the Pier 39 parking garage right across the street. Level 3 has a bridge that goes over the street and descends onto the pier. The view from the bridge is a great way to get your students excited about the day.
When you’re done with the aquarium, head to the end of the pier for some ice cream, a magic act, a gorgeous view of Alcatraz, and the pier’s very own wild sea lion population. Visit the shops for souvenirs, memorabilia, and fun trinkets. They even have a “left-handers only” shop!
The Aquarium of the Bay is a great way to include some wonderful learning opportunities into an exciting day in San Francisco!
