The California Living Museum is a small zoo located in East Bakersfield near Hart Park. They rescue and take care of animals that are native to California. They have a touchpool and a petting zoo too!
Parking is free and there is plenty of it. Outside food is allowed, and they have a picnic are that even has a playground so you can stop for lunch and rest. It can be very hot in Bakersfield during certain times of year, so be sure to bring plenty of cold water or money for their vending machines.
The staff at CALM are very friendly, and they often have keeper chats, so check in at the front desk to see if they have anything scheduled for the day. Though the zoo is small, there is plenty to see, and a visit to CALM can easily take up most of the day, especially if you do some fun educational activities like s scavenger hunt. Because it’s a small zoo, older kids can pair up and roam the grounds together safely. CALM is fun for the whole family!
