Travel Guide

The Exploratorium was the brainchild of Frank Oppenheimer. At various times, Frank was a professor, a high school teacher, a cattle rancher, and an experimental physicist. While teaching at a university, Frank developed a “library of experiments” that enabled his students to explore scientific phenomena at their own pace, following their own curiosity. Alarmed by the public’s lack of understanding of science and technology, Frank used this model to create the Exploratorium, believing that visitors could learn about natural phenomena and also gain confidence in their ability to understand the world around them. This was a groundbreaking idea for a science museum in 1969 when the Exploratorium opened.

The Exploratorium is absolutely packed with interactive exhibits! With multiple wings, your students will learn about every nook and cranny of science, biology, mathematics, technology, and engineering! The Exploratorium is located on the Embarcadero, so plan some extra time to find a place to park. If you park at the Pier 15 or Pier 19 ½ lots, you can use the discount code 1234000 to receive slightly less expensive parking.

Outside food is allowed, but eating in the main experimental wings is discouraged. There is a picnic area available where you can eat lunch. And there are even exhibits out there! They also have an eatery with state of the art healthy food options, and corn dogs for the picky eaters! Plan for a whole day, and you’ll never forget your trip to the Exploratorium!
