Travel Guide

The Oakland Zoo is located in the beautiful Oakland foothills. Surrounded by natural Bay Area woods, the zoo is a perfect place to lose yourself in the trees and see some amazing animals! The zoo is home to over 850 native and exotic animals. They’re recognized for their outstanding animal care, particularly their elephant care program, and for their Leed-certified, 17,000 square foot, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital — the largest wild animal veterinary facility in Northern California.

Parking isn’t free, so be prepared to pay for that upon arrival. Outside food is allowed (no glass bottle), but they also have some great eateries on-site. They have some beautiful picnic spaces around the zoo to enjoy!

Definitely plan for a full day, it’s a large zoo! They have an innovative California Trail section that you’ll love! Through live native animal and plant habitats, the trail highlights the delicate balance between plants, animals, and humans, and the impact of change on all three. From casual visitors to serious students and scientists, all can join in the effort to nurture and create a better California! Your students will absolutely love the Oakland Zoo!
