Travel Guide
Founded in 1874, the San Diego Society of Natural History is the oldest scientific institution in southern California, and the third oldest west of the Mississippi. In its initial years, the Society was the region’s primary source of scientific culture, serving a small but growing community eager for information about its natural resources. Now, the museum is one of the best natural history museums in the west!
Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the United States. The Natural History Museum shares the park with 14 other museums, many highly regarded performing arts venues, gardens and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. All parking is free in Balboa Park. Outside food is not allowed, but there are many beautiful areas to picnic in Balboa Park. Your students will love their visit to this amazing museum!
